The Grand Canal in Venice, Italy forms one of the major water-traffic corridors in the city. Public transport is provided by water buses and private water taxis, and many tourists explore the canal by gondola.

One end of the canal leads into the lagoon near the Santa Lucia railway station and the other end leads into Saint Mark Basin; in between, it makes a large reverse-S shape through the central districts of Venice. More Grand Canal

Apollonio Domenichini, alternatively referred to as the Maestro della Fondazione Langmatt, or Menichini or il Menichino (Venice, 1715 - c.1770) was an Italian painter of vedute, active in Venice, Italy, between 1740 and 1770.

He was a pupil of Luca Carlevarijs and Johan Richter. He is best known for his pictorial representations of views of Venice and its surroundings. His name is recorded in the records of the fraglia or guild of Venetian painters in 1757, and it often appears as the painter of many works sent by the art dealer Giovanni Maria Sasso to the English minister John Strange in the second half of the eighteenth century. His name was proposed as the "master of the Langmatt Foundation" name from the series of thirteen vedute owned by the Langmatt Foundation in Baden near Zurich. More on Apollonio Domenichini

The first dry crossing of the Grand Canal was a pontoon bridge built in 1181 by Nicolò Barattieri. It was called the Ponte della Moneta, presumably because of the mint that stood near its eastern entrance.

The development and importance of the Rialto market on the eastern bank increased traffic on the floating bridge, so it was replaced in 1255 by a wooden bridge.[2] This structure had two inclined ramps meeting at a movable central section, that could be raised to allow the passage of tall ships. The connection with the market eventually led to a change of name for the bridge. During the first half of the 15th century, two rows of shops were built along the sides of the bridge. The rents brought an income to the State Treasury, which helped maintain the bridge. More on the Rialto Bridge

Edward Pritchett (fl. 1828 – 1864) was a nineteenth-century English painter and man of mystery.

Nothing is known of Pritchett's life; he has appropriately been described as "elusive." He may have lived to 1879. Pritchett spent more than three decades living and working in Venice, producing admirable views of the city; he was one of a group of English artists who produced notable records of the scenes of northern Italy, a group that included John Wharlton Bunney, James Holland, the brothers-in-law Luke Fildes and Henry Woods, and, in a later generation, William Logsdail. Santa Maria della Salute (English: Saint Mary of Health), commonly known simply as the Salute, is a Roman Catholic church and minor basilica located at Punta della Dogana in the Dorsoduro sestiere of the city of Venice, Italy.

It stands on the narrow finger of Punta della Dogana, between the Grand Canal and the Giudecca Canal, at the Bacino di San Marco, making the church visible when entering the Piazza San Marco from the water. The Salute is part of the parish of the Gesuati and is the most recent of the so-called plague churches.

In 1630, Venice experienced an unusually devastating outbreak of the plague. As a votive offering for the city's deliverance from the pestilence, the Republic of Venice vowed to build and dedicate a church to Our Lady of Health (or of Deliverance, Italian: Salute). The church was designed in the then fashionable baroque style by Baldassare Longhena. Construction began in 1631. Most of the objects of art housed in the church bear references to the Black Death.

The dome of the Salute was an important addition to the Venice skyline and soon became emblematic of the city, inspiring artists like Canaletto, J. M. W. Turner, John Singer Sargent, and the Venetian artist Francesco Guardi. More on Santa Maria della Salute

Giuseppe Da Pozzo, (1844-1919)

Giuseppe Da Pozzo, (1844-1919) was born of in Maranzanis di Comeglians , in Carnia. In 1863 he moved to Venice to attend the courses of the Fine Arts Academy, completing the with the attendance of the School of painting of the nude (1866-1867). In the seventies he began to participate in major Italian exhibitions with paintings of historical-religious subjects. He was soon attracted by the veritable school of Barbizon and the Impressionists. Pozzo interpreted the landscape with realistic accents and was always careful to document the lives of men. From 1878 he resided in Rome. He made numerous trips to Austria, Hungary and from 1880 to England and Ireland, becoming fascinated in 1888 by Scotland. He participated in the National Fine Arts Exhibitions of Turin (1880, 1884), Milan (1881, 1883, 1886), at the Florence Promotrice (1882, 1883). At the National Exposition of Turin (1884) and the Provincial of Udine (1883) he alternated paintings of genre and of Roman, Carnian and Venetian landscapes

He participated in numerous Venetian Biennials (1897, 1899, 1903, 1912) above all with some portraits. He founded in Rome a school of painting "Academy for ladies", marrying in 1902 one of his pupils, the New Zealander Isabel Cargill, who opened, together with Miss Babington, the famous tea house in Trinità dei Monti. 1903 was a crucial year: Pozzo exhibited numerous portraits, landscapes, genre scenes at the Udine Regional Exposition and was present at the Venice Biennale. In 1907 he participated in the International Exhibition of Fine Arts in Rome with landscapes and watercolors which he had dedicated since 1891. In 1910 he executed for the church of S. Floriano in Maranzanis di Comeglians a shovel rich in Liberty motifs at the Previati. From 1913 is his last participation in the exhibition of the watercolorists of Rome, then the years of war and the disease to the heart he turned away from painting until his death in 1919. Pozzo can be considered the leader of the landscape genre in Friuli, lived the events of Impressionist painting and knew how to seize the art nouveau ferments. More on Giuseppe Da Pozzo

Otto Hellmeier, German Impressionist (1908 – 1996)

Otto Hellmeier was born in Weilheim, Germany in 1908. After completing high school, he started to study engineering. Painting and music had become his devotion, but engineering was soon put aside for painting. He studied at the Munich Conservatory and after the completion of his studies, he was soon in demand as a instrumentalist in orchestras, and was introduced on the Bavarian Radio broadcasts as a soloist. Otto Hellmeier had two lovers, his music and his painting. Otto lead a modest and frugal life which benefited his art. His hard work and his great talent in painting brought him great success. Otto left his estate for the purpose of building the Culture House in Raisting, Germany. His struggle for truth and beauty of artistic expression earned him high recognition. Painting fascinated him even more than music, and he decided not to act as a self-taught artist, but rather sought instruction under Carl Otto Müller and Professor Wilhelm Funk. Otto decided to travel to other European countries including Switzerland, Austria, Italy and France which brought his longing for travel to rest.

Hellmeier had a long-standing membership in the Royal Bavarian Künstlergenossenschaft of 1868. His painting was moved to the forefront because of the demand from both Germany and abroad. An easel, canvas and colors accompanied him even in the Bürgerheim town of Weilheim, where he had spent his last months before his death in December 1996. More on Otto Hellmeier

J Vivian: It is unusual to come across an artist with such considerable talent about whom there is so little biographical information, other than that she lived in London. She exhibited five works at the Royal Society of British Artists. Today her work is exhibited in museums and cities throughout Britain. She is a highly collectable artist, specializing in paintings of Venice. Her greatest talent was for capturing the spirit of perhaps the world’s most romantic and cultural city.

Monique Laville, self-taught professional painter, born in Marseille on February 2, 1950 under the name of Saccomanni, "I exhibit in France as well as abroad solo or in group since 1984 with different artistic recognitions and awards.

My paintings are strongly influenced by the Impressionist movement with a very personal touch, my painting expresses the commitment and a deep cry to show that since 1900 the productivist society has brought damage in the world at the level of ecology and humanism.
Many of our historic places in France have disappeared to give way to modernism (like the Promenade des Anglais in Nice)

All the our old trades have disappear: fishing, harvesting, harvesting for a gain... and our productivity at the expense of humans such as the pickers of lavender, carnations ... which are no longer done by hand

Our society has become individualistic where people are ignoring themselves and all our values are disappearing.

This is the message I want to convey through my painting ... and it is thanks to Impressionism that I can express these values." More on Monique Laville

Venice is known as "the City of Canals" and contains 182 named canals which break down further into Canal Segments connecting Venice' islands.. The longest canal is the Grand Canal which spans 4,016 meters. In Venice, a single canal is called rio.

The current canals of Venice are descendants of natural lagoon channels that separated the original islands. With the development of the City of Venice, their natural paths were gradually modified through land reclamation that brought the islands closer and closer to each other, resulting in the canal network one can observe today. Due to these pervasive human interventions, only a few of today's canals still retain their original natural course, as evidenced by the Grand Canal, whose sinuous shape clearly betrays its natural origins.

The Ponte dei Fuseri , constructed in 1755. It crosses the Rio dei Fuseri bridging a gap of 7.24 meters. On the northern side of the bridge is the sestiere of San Marco and on the southern side is also San Marco .There are 2 ramps.The steps are paved with Trachite. Also, this bridge has 1 arch.

Egisto Massoni (Pisa, 1854 – Venice, 1929) was an Italian painter, of vedute and vistas dal vero. He painted both in oil and watercolor.

He was a resident of Pisa. He painted landscapes of the countryside around Rome and seascapes and vedute of Venice. At Turin, in 1884, he exhibited two paintings: In laguna a Venezia and A Canal at Venice.

After a stay in Liguria, he was in Rome before 1880, a period in which he participated in the custom of "artistic outings", to paint from the truth in the Roman countryside (Studies from life in Cervara, exposed in Rome in 1880 ). In the following decade he moved to Campania and Venice to paint marinas. In the capital he exhibited annually with the associations of the Amateurs and the Cultori and the Acquarellisti until 1893. Richard S Johnson: The luminescent beauty and lyrical quality of Richard S Johnson's work is what captivates collectors today. Old Masters technical virtuosity, pre-Raphael romanticism, and contemporary expressionism and abstraction all combine to create his unique works of touching depth and artistry.

Born in Chicago to an artistic family, his earliest reminiscences are of pouring through Charles Dana Gibson, NC Wyeth, and John Singer Sargent books on rainy afternoons. While still in grade school, he won a scholarship to the prestigious Art Institute of Chicago. He later attended the American Academy of Art and upon graduation began a very successful career as an illustrator before becoming an award-winning fine artist.

Soren Emil Carlsen (October 19, 1853 – January 2, 1932, New York City, U.S.) was an American Impressionist painter who emigrated to the United States from Denmark. He became known for his still lifes. In an era when many artists succumbed to the pressure resulting from The Armory Show to follow modernistic "developments" Carlsen remained faithful to his inborn aesthetic sense. Later in his career Carlsen expanded his range of subjects and becoming known for landscapes and marines as well.

During his long career he won many of the most important honors in American art and was elected to membership in the National Academy of Design. For more than forty years he was also a respected teacher in Chicago, San Francisco and New York. More on Soren Emil Carlsen

Dusan Djukaric was born in Teslic, former Yugoslavia, in 1971. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Belgrade, where he still works and lives. For a long time, some two decades, he has been painting frescoes, icons and roof-screens in churches and monasteries, and many of his icons are now part of collections in foreign embassies and diplomatic headquarters.

In the arts world, Dusan Djukaric is known and appreciated for his watercoloursr. As far as the subject matter is concerned, his watercolours paint the world of the artist’s surrounding. There are landscapes of towns and coasts, human figures, nudes, animals. But whatever the themes are, his paintings are equally soft and poetic, with an atmosphere of immediacy and warmth.

Djukaric is subtle and transparent when he paints coasts and seas – beaches, boats, fishermen, ports. These watercolours are full of light, the blueness of the sky and shimmering reflections of the sun against the water surface. With his sense for the subject, he successfully shows the difference between the fleeting nature of the water and the light, opposed to the lasting impression of a stone, a house, a tree.

The colors range from silvery-blue, ochre, to the purple, red and violet tones. The element of light, indispensable in watercolour, helps present a flickering atmosphere that the artist brings to his work. The brush strokes are free, but precise enough not to lose the form of the subject, and still lyrical and fugacious.

Given the difficulty of watercolour as a technique, avoided by most artists, we can only praise the great virtuosity of Dusan Djukaric, who appears to be creating with ease his watercolours full of optimism and beauty.
