John Aldridge was educated at Uppingham School and at Corpus Christi College, University of Oxford. From 1928 to 1933 he lived in London, making frequent visits to Holland, France, Italy, Germany and Spain. In 1933 he moved to Essex, settling in Great Barfield. At the time he was one of a group of artists including Eric Ravilious and Edward Bawden who found inspiration in the Essex countryside. They later collected together an exhibition of their own pictures which toured the villages of Essex. His first one-man show was at the Leicester Galleries, London in 1933, he later exhibited with the Seven and Five Society alongside artists such as Ben Nicholson, Ivon Hitchens, David Jones and John Piper. He was elected a Royal Academician in 1963. Although he never went to art school, Aldridge became a remarkable and valued part-time teacher at the Slade School of Fine Art. Besides painting in oils, Aldridge designed textiles and wallpapers, and illustrated books. His pictures are built up out of the commonplace ingredients that any observant person could have found in the villages and fields and back gardens of Essex. The Grand Canal in Venice, Italy forms one of the major water-traffic corridors in the city. Public transport is provided by water buses and private water taxis, and many tourists explore the canal by gondola.

One end of the canal leads into the lagoon near the Santa Lucia railway station and the other end leads into Saint Mark Basin; in between, it makes a large reverse-S shape through the central districts of Venice. More Grand Canal

Santa Maria della Carità. The first documented church and convent on this site were founded in 1134 by an Augustinian order of friars from Ravenna, although it is said there was a wooden church on the site before this, erected to house a miracle-working Madonna. It was consecrated by Pope Alexander II on April 5th 1177, following the six months he spent hiding in the convent from Frederick Barbarossa. In 1260 the buildings passed to the Scuola Grande di Santa Maria della Carità, making it the oldest of the six Scuole Grande in Venice. The church at this time had an external portico, once a common feature in Venice but the only two remaining are on San Nicolò dei Mendicoli and San Giacomo di Rialto. Bernardo Canal (Venice, Italy, 1664-1744) was an Italian painter of the 17th century. He was the father of the well-known painter Canaletto (Giovanni Antonio Canal, above) and follower of Luca Carlevarijs (1663-1730).

In 1695 he married Artemisia Barbieri. In 1717 he is registered for the first time in the guild of Venetian painters where he is recognized as a Member of the College of painters. On December 28, 1739, this organization awarded him the title of prior. He had two sons named Cristoforo and Antonio, the latter, became the great painter Canaletto, who began painting with his father.

Canal was mainly dedicated to painting stage sets for works by Vivaldi , Chelleri, Pollarolo and Orlandini in Venetian theaters in Sant'Angelo and San Cassiano. He later began painting urban scenes of Venice, joining, like his son, the movement of veduttismo.

His style, was characterized by the meticulousness in the architectural detail and the technical of luminosity. More on Bernardo Canal

J Vivian: It is unusual to come across an artist with such considerable talent about whom there is so little biographical information, other than that she lived in London. She exhibited five works at the Royal Society of British Artists. Today her work is exhibited in museums and cities throughout Britain. She is a highly collectable artist, specializing in paintings of Venice. Her greatest talent was for capturing the spirit of perhaps the world’s most romantic and cultural city.

Rubens Santoro, 1859 - 1942, ITALIAN

Rubens Santoro (October 26, 1859 in Mongrassano, Province of Cosenza, Calabria – 1942 in Naples) was an Italian painter. He moved to Naples at 10 years of age, to study literature, but his inclination was painting. He only briefly enrolled at the Neapolitan Academy, instead, real life was his model. His first work was a small and simple genre piece: A Girl who Laughs, exhibited at the Promotrice. Domenico Morelli took note and encouraged him.

Santoro continually changed his vistas, painting in Torre Annunziata, Castellammare di Stabia, Procida, the Amalfi Coast, and Resina. During the long trips to the open countryside, he distracted himself by playing the mandolin. Many of his Amalfi landscapes were bought by the Goupil Gallery. Two were displayed at the 1877 Exposition at Naples: Marina di Maiuri and Grotta degli Zingari. He moved to Paris, and after an excursion in England, returned to Naples even more prolifict. His painting Verona, exhibited at 1911 exhibition of Barcelona was awarded a Silver medal. More on Rubens Santoro

NICOLAS RUEL

Nicolas Ruel was born in Montreal in 1973. Since more than a decade, the photographer has explored the evolution of civilization and urbanism throughout three series, namely, Civilization, Cityscape and Monochrome, with a particular focus on historical sites and metropolises. The artist has developed both singular printing techniques and an in-camera double-exposure method to create unique visual signatures. His works have been featured in solo and group exhibitions in Canada, Europe and the United States. His photographs are part of numerous public and private collections, namely, Musée des beaux-arts de Montréal, Power Corporation, Loto-Québec, Groupe Financier Banque TD, BMO Groupe financier, The Rothschild Group et Microsoft. Piazza San Marco or St. Mark’s Square is the main public square in Venice. The Piazza is located in front of the great Byzantine church known as Basilica di San Marco. This Piazza is surrounded by shops, caffè’s and palazzi on three sides. According to local legend Napoleon called the Piazza San Marco “the drawing room of Europe.” More on Piazza San Marco

David Roberts RA (b Stockbridge [now a district of Edinburgh], 24 Oct. 1796; d London, 25 Nov. 1864). Scottish painter. He was apprenticed to a house painter, then worked as a scene painter for theatres in Edinburgh and Glasgow. In 1822 he settled in London and worked at the Drury Lane Theatre with his friend Clarkson Stanfield. From 1833 he travelled widely in Europe and the Mediterranean basin and made a fortune with his topographical views.

He worked in oil and watercolour and published lavishly illustrated books, among them the six-volume Views in the Holy Land, Syria, Idumea, Arabia, Egypt and Nubia (1842–9). His work can be monotonous when seen en masse, but at his best he combines bold design with precise observation. More David Roberts

John Singer Sargent, (American, born Italy, 1856-1925)

Sargent’s underdrawing for the church is meticulously executed in straight ruled graphite lines, whose end points are visible at the bottoms and tops of columns. Horizontal ruled lines of the stairs are visible through the washes of the figures in the boat. In contrast, the boats and figures in the foreground have minimal underdrawing and are rendered in loose, mostly wet washes. Sargent used a sharp tool to scrape off paint and create the squiggly highlights on and around the boats. This is the largest Sargent watercolor in Brooklyn’s collection. More on this painting

Santa Maria della Salute, commonly known simply as the Salute, is a Roman Catholic church and minor basilica located at Punta della Dogana in the Dorsoduro sestiere of the city of Venice, Italy.

It stands on the narrow finger of Punta della Dogana, between the Grand Canal and the Giudecca Canal, at the Bacino di San Marco, making the church visible when entering the Piazza San Marco from the water. The Salute is part of the parish of the Gesuati and is the most recent of the so-called plague-churches.

The dome of the Salute was an important addition to the Venice skyline and soon became emblematic of the city, inspiring artists like Canaletto, J. M. W. Turner, John Singer Sargent, and Francesco Guardi. More on Santa Maria della Salute

John Singer Sargent (January 12, 1856 – April 14, 1925) was an American artist, considered the "leading portrait painter of his generation" for his evocations of Edwardian era luxury. During his career, he created roughly 900 oil paintings and more than 2,000 watercolors, as well as countless sketches and charcoal drawings. His oeuvre documents worldwide travel, from Venice to the Tyrol, Corfu, the Middle East, Montana, Maine, and Florida.

His parents were American, but he was trained in Paris prior to moving to London. Sargent enjoyed international acclaim as a portrait painter, although not without controversy and some critical reservation; an early submission to the Paris Salon, his "Portrait of Madame X", was intended to consolidate his position as a society painter, but it resulted in scandal instead. From the beginning his work was characterized by remarkable technical facility, particularly in his ability to draw with a brush, which in later years inspired admiration as well as criticism for a supposed superficiality. His commissioned works were consistent with the grand manner of portraiture, while his informal studies and landscape paintings displayed a familiarity with Impressionism. In later life Sargent expressed ambivalence about the restrictions of formal portrait work, and devoted much of his energy to mural painting and working en plein air. Thomas Bush Hardy, 1842 - 1897

Thomas Bush Hardy (1842, Sheffield – 1897, Maida Vale, London) was a British marine painter and watercolourist. As a young man he travelled in the Netherlands and Italy. In 1884 Hardy was elected a Member of the Royal Society of British Artists. He exhibited with the Society and also at the Royal Academy.

His paintings feature coastal scenes in England and the Netherlands, the French Channel ports and the Venetian Lagoon.

Hardy had nine children. His son Dudley Hardy was a painter, illustrator and poster designer. His daughter Dorothy received an MBE after working as a nurse in the First World War. He died on 15 December 1897 in Maida Vale, London. More on Thomas Bush Hardy

Jacques-Louis-Jules David, 1829-1886, was the grandson of the immensely influential neo-classical Jacques-Louis David. Additionally, Jules David was an art historian in his own right, and among his grandfather's first biographers. He entered the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in 1849 where he studied with Cogniet and Picot.
