Santa Maria della Salute (English: Saint Mary of Health), commonly known simply as the Salute, is a Roman Catholic church and minor basilica located at Punta della Dogana in the Dorsoduro sestiere of the city of Venice, Italy.

It stands on the narrow finger of Punta della Dogana, between the Grand Canal and the Giudecca Canal, at the Bacino di San Marco, making the church visible when entering the Piazza San Marco from the water. The Salute is part of the parish of the Gesuati and is the most recent of the so-called plague churches.

In 1630, Venice experienced an unusually devastating outbreak of the plague. As a votive offering for the city's deliverance from the pestilence, the Republic of Venice vowed to build and dedicate a church to Our Lady of Health (or of Deliverance, Italian: Salute). The church was designed in the then fashionable baroque style by Baldassare Longhena. Construction began in 1631. Most of the objects of art housed in the church bear references to the Black Death.

The dome of the Salute was an important addition to the Venice skyline and soon became emblematic of the city, inspiring artists like Canaletto, J. M. W. Turner, John Singer Sargent, and the Venetian artist Francesco Guardi. More on Santa Maria della Salute

Raoul Dufy (3 June 1877 – 23 March 1953) was a French Fauvist painter, brother of Jean Dufy. He developed a colorful, decorative style that became fashionable for designs of ceramics and textiles, as well as decorative schemes for public buildings. He is noted for scenes of open-air social events. He was also a draftsman, printmaker, book illustrator, scenic designer, a designer of furniture, and a planner of public spaces. More on Raoul Dufy

Piazza San Marco or St. Mark’s Square is the main public square in Venice.  The Piazza is located in front of the great Byzantine church known as Basilica di San Marco. This Piazza is surrounded by shops, caffè’s and palazzi on three sides. According to local legend Napoleon called the Piazza San Marco “the drawing room of Europe.” More on Piazza San Marco

Canaletto, byname of Giovanni Antonio Canal (born Oct. 18, 1697, Venice—died April 20, 1768, Venice) Italian topographical painter whose masterful expression of atmosphere in his detailed views (vedute) of Venice and London and of English country homes influenced succeeding generations of landscape artists.

Canaletto was born into a noble family whose coat of arms he occasionally used as a signature. How he came to be known as Canaletto is uncertain, however; perhaps the name was first used to distinguish him from his father, Bernardo Canal, a theatrical scene painter in whose studio Canaletto assisted. More

Canaletto's early works remain his most coveted and, according to many authorities, his best. One of his early pieces is The Stonemason's Yard (1729, London, the National Gallery) which depicts a humble working area of the city.

Later Canaletto painted grand scenes of the canals of Venice and the Doge's Palace. His large-scale landscapes portrayed the city's pageantry and waning traditions, making innovative use of atmospheric effects and strong local colors. For these qualities, his works may be said to have anticipated Impressionism. More on Canaletto

Piazza San Marco, often known in English as St Mark's Square, is the principal public square of Venice, Italy, where it is generally known just as la Piazza. The Piazzetta ("little Piazza/Square") is an extension of the Piazza towards the lagoon in its south east corner. The two spaces together form the social, religious and political centre of Venice and are commonly considered together. This article relates to both of them.

A remark usually attributed (though without proof) to Napoleon calls the Piazza San Marco "the drawing room of Europe". More on Piazza San Marco

Amédée Rosier 1831-1898 Amédée Rosier was born in North-West France in 1831. He first exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1857, and in the 1876 exhibition he was honored with a medal for his work. Rosier also received a medal at the 1889 Exposition Universelle in Paris. Rosier traveled extensively throughout Europe and North Africa and was known for his marine painting and town scenes. His love of these two genres explains his frequent stays in Venice which provided the inspiration for this painting. Rosier’s work was highly sought-after in his own lifetime and now hangs in many museums throughout France including Bernay, Mulhouse and St.Etienne. More on Amédée Rosier

Venice
Oil on canvas
40x50 cm

Pietro Fragiacomo (14 August 1856 – 18 May 1922) was an Italian painter, depicting sea and land-scapes. He was born in the mainly Italian town of Pirano d'Istria near Trieste, but lived most of his life in Venice. He only studied for a year at the Academy of Fine Arts of Venice.

In 1887, he exhibited successfully at the Esposizione di Venezia. In 1889, he won a bronze medal at the Universal Exhibition of 1889 in Paris and took part in the Munich International Exhibition of the same year, as well as later editions.

He drew mainly seascapes and cityscapes of Venice, often at night, a thematic also pursued by Mario de Maria. By the turn of the century, his style had acquired Symbolist overtones devoid of a realistic locale. He won the Prince Umberto Prize at the Milan Triennale of 1891 and was a regular participant from 1895 to 1922 at the Venice Biennale, which displayed a solo show of his work in 1910 and a posthumous retrospective in 1924. He died in Venice. More on Pietro Fragiacomo

The Riva degli Schiavoni (Shore of the Slaves) is the most beautiful among the localities of Venice ; it is the most delightful esplanade that can be imagined, thanks to the incomparable panorama that unfolds before it, to the vast expanse of its Lagoon furrowed with innumerable boats of all kinds, graciously adorned with its surrounding islands, thanks to the majesty of the palaces along the banks of the Grand Canal and thanks to the superb perspective of the Lido. Its name is due to the custom of landing merchant slave ships. More on The Riva degli Schiavoni

Paul Augustin Aizpiri (14 May 1919 22 January 2016) was a French artist. Aizpiris art is largely influenced by expressionist and Cubist elements. The motives have often been vases and clown portraits , but he also has taken motifs from the more typical French, among other Mediterranean cities. His artwork is often characterized by a distinctive use of color, which makes his pictures easily recognizable. Aïzpiri is particularly highly valued in Japan, where he has his own museum. More Aizpiri

According to local legend Napoleon called the Piazza San Marco “the drawing room of Europe.” More on Piazza San Marco

Theo Tobiasse was born in Palestine in 1927 to Lithuanian parents. Due to financial difficulty, at a young age, Tobiasse was forced to move to Kovno then Paris, where his father attempted to find work as a typographer. These moves greatly affected Tobiasse, and the themes of exile and displacement are often found in his works.

Tobiasse began his formal artist training at the Ecole des Arts Decoratifs in Paris, but his education was cut short during World War II when discriminatory laws forced him to leave school for confinement in his family’s apartment for two years. When the war was over, Tobiasse had amassed a plethora of drawings that helped him launch a career in design and advertising, which he did for fifteen years in Paris and Nice. Tobiasse devoted himself entirely to painting in 1962 after a successful exhibition in Nice.

Theo Tobiasse lived and worked in Saint-Paul de Vence. He died on November 3, 2012. More Théo Tobiasse
