(CNN) -- Venice has suffered its worst flooding in 22 years, leaving some parts of the historic Italian city neck-deep in water, reports said Monday.

Water burst the banks of the coastal city's famed canals, leaving the landmark Piazza San Marco -- St Mark's Square -- under almost a meter of water at one point, news agency ANSA reported. Mon December 1, 2008

Piazza San Marco, often known in English as St Mark's Square, is the principal public square of Venice, Italy, where it is generally known just as la Piazza. The Piazzetta ("little Piazza/Square") is an extension of the Piazza towards San Marco basin in its southeast corner (see plan). The two spaces together form the social, religious and political centre of Venice and are referred to together. This article relates to both of them. More on Piazza San Marco

John Randall Bratby, (born July 19, 1928, Wimbledon, Surrey—died July 20, 1992, Hastings, East Sussex), British painter who rose to prominence in the 1950s as a member of the Kitchen Sink School, a group of British social-realist artists who paralleled the literary Angry Young Men of the decade.

Although he was accepted at the Slade School of Fine Art, Bratby attended the Royal College of Art (1951–54). His first solo exhibition, mounted at the Beaux Arts Gallery in London (1954), gained him instant popularity. For many years after his artwork appeared in the motion picture The Horse’s Mouth (1958), he was identified in the popular imagination with the film’s protagonist, a bohemian artist. Bratby was particularly known for the feverish speed at which he worked and for the thick texture of his vividly coloured, Expressionistic paintings, into which he often incorporated everyday objects. His productivity did not decline with his popularity in the 1960s, as he continued to create thousands of sketches and paintings, including hundreds of portraits. He wrote several autobiographical novels, notably Breakdown (1960), and served as editor in chief of Art Quarterly from 1987.

The Patriarchal Cathedral Basilica of Saint Mark, commonly known as St Mark's Basilica, is the cathedral church of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Venice, northern Italy. It is the most famous of the city's churches and one of the best known examples of Italo-Byzantine architecture. It lies at the eastern end of the Piazza San Marco, adjacent and connected to the Doge's Palace. Originally it was the chapel of the Doge, and has been the city's cathedral only since 1807, when it became the seat of the Patriarch of Venice, archbishop of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Venice, formerly at San Pietro di Castello. Rubens Santoro (October 26, 1859 in Mongrassano, Province of Cosenza, Calabria – 1942 in Naples) was an Italian painter. He moved to Naples at 10 years of age, to study literature, but his inclination was painting. He only briefly enrolled at the Neapolitan Academy, instead, real life was his model. His first work was a small and simple genre piece: A Girl who Laughs, exhibited at the Promotrice. Domenico Morelli took note and encouraged him.

Santoro continually changed his vistas, painting in Torre Annunziata, Castellammare di Stabia, Procida, the Amalfi Coast, and Resina. During the long trips to the open countryside, he distracted himself by playing the mandolin. Many of his Amalfi landscapes were bought by the Goupil Gallery. Two were displayed at the 1877 Exposition at Naples: Marina di Maiuri and Grotta degli Zingari.  He moved to Paris, and after an excursion in England, returned to Naples even more prolifict. His painting Verona, exhibited at 1911 exhibition of Barcelona was awarded a Silver medal. More on Rubens Santoro

Santa Maria della Salute (English: Saint Mary of Health), commonly known simply as the Salute, is a Roman Catholic church and minor basilica located at Punta della Dogana in the Dorsoduro sestiere of the city of Venice, Italy.

It stands on the narrow finger of Punta della Dogana, between the Grand Canal and the Giudecca Canal, at the Bacino di San Marco, making the church visible when entering the Piazza San Marco from the water. The Salute is part of the parish of the Gesuati and is the most recent of the so-called plague churches.

In 1630, Venice experienced an unusually devastating outbreak of the plague. As a votive offering for the city's deliverance from the pestilence, the Republic of Venice vowed to build and dedicate a church to Our Lady of Health (or of Deliverance, Italian: Salute). The church was designed in the then fashionable baroque style by Baldassare Longhena. Construction began in 1631. Most of the objects of art housed in the church bear references to the Black Death.

The dome of the Salute was an important addition to the Venice skyline and soon became emblematic of the city, inspiring artists like Canaletto, J. M. W. Turner, John Singer Sargent, and the Venetian artist Francesco Guardi. More on Santa Maria della Salute

Paul Signac, (born Nov. 11, 1863, Paris, France—died Aug. 15, 1935, Paris) French painter who, with Georges Seurat, developed the technique called pointillism.
When he was 18, Signac gave up the study of architecture for painting and, through Armand Guillaumin, became a convert to the colouristic principles of Impressionism. In 1884 Signac helped found the Salon des Indépendants. There he met Seurat, whom he initiated into the broken-colour technique of Impressionism. The two went on to develop the method they called pointillism, which became the basis of Neo-Impressionism. They continued to apply pigment in minute dabs of pure colour, as had the Impressionists, but they adopted an exact, almost scientific system of applying the dots, instead of the somewhat intuitive application of the earlier masters. In watercolours Signac used the principle in a much freer manner. After 1886 he took part regularly in the annual Salon des Indépendants, to which he sent landscapes, seascapes, and decorative panels. Being a sailor, Signac traveled widely along the European coast, painting the landscapes he encountered. In his later years he painted scenes of Paris, Viviers, and other French cities.
Signac produced much critical writing and was the author of From Eugène Delacroix to Neo-Impressionism (1899) and Jongkind (1927). The former book is an exposition of pointillism, while the latter is an insightful treatise on watercolour painting. More on Paul Signac

01 Painting of the Canals of Venice, Alberto Prosdocimi's Venice, with footnotes #114

Many domestic and international trains discharge passengers at the Stazione Ferroviaria Santa Lucia, an incongruously modern but efficient railway station in the historic center, next to the causeway that leads to the mainland.

As they leave the station's main entrance, they head toward the floating waterbus platforms. Buy a ticket before boarding the No. 1 vaporetto, which makes stops all along the Grand Canal, or the No. 2 express boat to San Marco.

Another (and much more expensive) option is to take a water taxi to your hotel.

Alberto Prosdocimi (September 9, 1852 – 1925) was an Italian painter and manuscript illuminator. He often painted vedute of Venice in pale and bright watercolors.

He studied painting at the Accademia of Venice, but also trained in the studio of his father. He often painted in watercolor, but like his father, he was a respected manuscript illuminator. He copied the Grimani Breviary held in the Library of San Marco at Venice.

He completed the diplomas of honor awarded by Florence to their mayor Peruzzi factory. He was commissioned by Queen Margherita to create an illuminated portrait of the Prince of Naples. He also made an elaborately illuminated album by the aristocracy of Padua and Verona as a gift to the Queen. He was engaged to tutor in painting the Princess Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen and of the hereditary Granduchess of Granduchessa Holdemburg. The latter commissioned some watercolors from him. St Mark's Basilica is the cathedral church of the Catholic Patriarchate of Venice. Its model was the sixth-century Church of the Holy Apostles in Constantinople, although accommodations were made to adapt the design to the limitations of the physical site and to meet the specific needs of Venetian state ceremonies. Middle-Byzantine, Romanesque, and Islamic influences are also evident, and Gothic elements were later incorporated. More on St Mark's Basilica

01 Painting of the Canals of Venice, Antoine Bouvard's Villa on Venice Canal, with footnotes #111

Antoine Bouvard, Sr. (French, 1870)
Villa on Venice Canal
Oil on canvas
10 3/4 in. x 13 3/4 in
Private collection

Antoine Bouvard, St. Jean-de-Bournay, 1870 - 1956 was a French landscape artist who notably often painted under the pseudonym Marc Aldine. Bouvard remains best known for his renderings of Venetian canal scenes, painted in warm tones and a hazy light that often accompanies the setting of the sun. A typical work is A Gondolier Before a Venetian Bridge, depicting the grand canal of the famous Italian city in a realist style that remained popular with tourists throughout his career. He was notably influenced by the French painter Félix Ziem, who was also popular for his poetic depictions of maritime scenes and port cities. Bouvard was born in 1870 in St. Jean-de-Bournay in L'Isere, France, and went on to study at the Academy of Beaux-Arts in Paris, befriending the French architect Constant-Dufeux who helped shape his career and aesthetic. He eventually became the director of architectural services for the Seine in tandem with his painting career, and is accredited with the construction of the Bourse du Travail in Paris. Though the artist remained based in Paris, he traveled frequently to Italy to paint Venice from observation, preferring to sell his work through dealers rather than having a public life. His son, Noel Bouvard, followed in his footsteps to become a landscape painter in a style similar to his father’s. The senior Bouvard died in 1956. More on Antoine Bouvard

Henri Duvieux, (1855 - 1920)
VIEW OF VENICE
Oil on Canvas
33 x 24.5 cm
Private collection

Henri Duvieux was born in 1855 in Paris. He entered his artistic studies as a student of Marilhat and after his debut at the Paris Salon in 1880 he continued to depict representations of Venice and Constantinople throughout his career.

Duvieux was influenced by the considerable nineteenth-century interest in Orientalism but he chose to concentrate his interest on landscapes and architecture and the effect of differing conditions of light in relation to them. He followed up his 1880 Salon debut by showing Campement Arabe (Arab Encampment) in 1882, which also marked his final appearance at the Salon. His paintings proved popular, striking a note with the considerable audience to whom this type of imagery appealed, acting as a memento of their travels. More on Henri Duvieux

Venetian Canal on a Sunny Afternoon
Oil on canvas

Private collection

Martín Rico y Ortega (12 November 1833, El Escorial – 13 April 1908, Venice, Italy) was a Spanish painter of landscapes and cityscapes. Rico was one of the most important artists of the second half of the nineteenth century in his native country, and enjoyed wide international recognition.

Rico was born in Madrid and received his earliest formal training at the city’s Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando, where he studied under Jenaro Pérez Villaamil. In 1860, having been awarded a government-sponsored scholarship, Rico moved to Paris to continue his studies.

His landscapes depict the French and Swiss countryside in a fully accomplished Realist style. Toward the end of 1870, due to political and social unrest caused by the outbreak of the Franco-Prussian War, Rico decided to leave France and return to his native Spain.

Rico moved to the southern city of Granada, joining Fortuny and his wife Cecilia, as well as the painter Ricardo de Madrazo. The three artists worked closely during this period, with the styles of Rico and Fortuny overlapping so much that their watercolors—a specialty for both artists—were often confused for one another. It was during this time that, through Fortuny’s influence, Rico’s paintings began to reveal a newfound sense of luminosity and color. His time in Andalucía was, according to his memoirs, one of his happiest, and also one of his most artistically productive periods. More on Martín Rico y Ortega
