Rio del Lovo is a canal in Venice in the sestiere of San Marco .

This rio is a very popular route for gondoliers. It connects the confluence of the rio dei Ferali , rio dei Bareteri and rio dei Scoacamini in a northwesterly direction with the Grand Canal.

The rio first passes under the ponte de le Balote on the eponymous street.

Further to the northwest, the rio passes under the ponte del Lovo , connecting the calle of the same name to the calle del Teatro , a reference to theCarlo-Goldoni theatre , nearby.

Finally, the rio runs along the Scuola Grande di San Teodoro on its eastern flank before emerging under the Ludovico Manin bridge on the Grand Canal between the Dolfin Manin Palace and the Bembo Palace.. This bridge connects Riva del Ferro and Riva del Carbon. More on Rio del Lovo

Antoine Bouvard, St. Jean-de-Bournay, 1870 - 1956 was a French landscape artist who notably often painted under the pseudonym Marc Aldine. Bouvard remains best known for his renderings of Venetian canal scenes, painted in warm tones and a hazy light that often accompanies the setting of the sun. A typical work is A Gondolier Before a Venetian Bridge, depicting the grand canal of the famous Italian city in a realist style that remained popular with tourists throughout his career. He was notably influenced by the French painter Félix Ziem, who was also popular for his poetic depictions of maritime scenes and port cities. Bouvard was born in 1870 in St. Jean-de-Bournay in L'Isere, France, and went on to study at the Academy of Beaux-Arts in Paris, befriending the French architect Constant-Dufeux who helped shape his career and aesthetic. He eventually became the director of architectural services for the Seine in tandem with his painting career, and is accredited with the construction of the Bourse du Travail in Paris. Though the artist remained based in Paris, he traveled frequently to Italy to paint Venice from observation, preferring to sell his work through dealers rather than having a public life. His son, Noel Bouvard, followed in his footsteps to become a landscape painter in a style similar to his father’s. The senior Bouvard died in 1956. More on Antoine Bouvard

01 Painting of the Canals of Venice, Henri Duvieux's VIEW OF VENICE, with footnotes. #107

Henri Duvieux, (1855 - 1920)
VIEW OF VENICE
Oil on Canvas
33 x 24.5 cm
Private collection

Henri Duvieux was born in 1855 in Paris. He entered his artistic studies as a student of Marilhat and after his debut at the Paris Salon in 1880 he continued to depict representations of Venice and Constantinople throughout his career.

Duvieux was influenced by the considerable nineteenth-century interest in Orientalism but he chose to concentrate his interest on landscapes and architecture and the effect of differing conditions of light in relation to them. He followed up his 1880 Salon debut by showing Campement Arabe (Arab Encampment) in 1882, which also marked his final appearance at the Salon. His paintings proved popular, striking a note with the considerable audience to whom this type of imagery appealed, acting as a memento of their travels. More on Henri Duvieux

Martín Rico y Ortega (12 November 1833, El Escorial – 13 April 1908, Venice, Italy) was a Spanish painter of landscapes and cityscapes. Rico was one of the most important artists of the second half of the nineteenth century in his native country, and enjoyed wide international recognition.

Rico was born in Madrid and received his earliest formal training at the city’s Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando, where he studied under Jenaro Pérez Villaamil. In 1860, having been awarded a government-sponsored scholarship, Rico moved to Paris to continue his studies.

His landscapes depict the French and Swiss countryside in a fully accomplished Realist style. Toward the end of 1870, due to political and social unrest caused by the outbreak of the Franco-Prussian War, Rico decided to leave France and return to his native Spain.

Rico moved to the southern city of Granada, joining Fortuny and his wife Cecilia, as well as the painter Ricardo de Madrazo. The three artists worked closely during this period, with the styles of Rico and Fortuny overlapping so much that their watercolors—a specialty for both artists—were often confused for one another. It was during this time that, through Fortuny’s influence, Rico’s paintings began to reveal a newfound sense of luminosity and color. His time in Andalucía was, according to his memoirs, one of his happiest, and also one of his most artistically productive periods. More on Martín Rico y Ortega

Edward Pritchett (fl. 1828 1864) was a nineteenth-century English painter and man of mystery.
Nothing is known of Pritchett's life; he has appropriately been described as "elusive." He may have lived to 1879. Pritchett spent more than three decades living and working in Venice, producing admirable views of the city; he was one of a group of English artists who produced notable records of the scenes of northern Italy, a group that included John Wharlton Bunney, James Holland, the brothers-in-law Luke Fildes and Henry Woods, and, in a later generation, William Logsdail. More on Edward Pritchett

Louis Abel-Truchet, 1857 - 1918,  was an important French painter, etcher and lithographer in his lifetime. He was born in 1857 in Versailles. He is predominantly known for his paintings depicting Paris at the turn of the century, with cafés, theatres, shops, everyday life and fashionable Parisians forming an essential part of the subject matter.

He exhibited from 1891 in various salons and was a founding member of the Salon d'Automne and the Societe des Humoristes. He also exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français and the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts, becoming a member in 1910.
Though influenced by impressionism, Abel-Truchet is also satirical at times and his work focused on the Belle Epoque, linking him with artists such as Galien-Laloue, Forain and Steinlen.

In 1914, aged fifty seven, he volunteered to fight in the World War One. He was to produce a series of lithographs depicting scenes from his experiences. The Grand Canal in Venice, Italy forms one of the major water-traffic corridors in the city. Public transport is provided by water buses and private water taxis, and many tourists explore the canal by gondola.

One end of the canal leads into the lagoon near the Santa Lucia railway station and the other end leads into Saint Mark Basin; in between, it makes a large reverse-S shape through the central districts of Venice. More Grand Canal

Giuseppe Borsato (1771 in Venice – 15 October 1849 in Venice) was an Italian. From 1791 to 1792, he studied with Agostino Mengozzi-Colonna at the Accademia di Belle Arti.

He painted interiors of churches, sometimes in the manner of Canaletto, but was also influenced by his contemporary, Vincenzo Chilone. Among his best known decorative works are those at St Mark's Basilica and Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari. In 1807, he and his student, Francesco Bagnara, decorated the Teatro La Fenice. He also painted frescoes in the Palazzo Zabarella during its renovation in 1818, alongside Francesco Hayez and Giovanni Carlo Bevilacqua.

In 1815, his paintings were used in a popular guide to the artworks of Venice, written by Giannantonio Moschini. In 1831, his lectures at the Accademia di Belle Arti were published by the Accademia as Opere Ornamentale. More on Giuseppe Borsato
