Richard S Johnson: The luminescent beauty and lyrical quality of Richard S Johnson's work is what captivates collectors today. Old Masters technical virtuosity, pre-Raphael romanticism, and contemporary expressionism and abstraction all combine to create his unique works of touching depth and artistry.

Born in Chicago to an artistic family, his earliest reminiscences are of pouring through Charles Dana Gibson, NC Wyeth, and John Singer Sargent books on rainy afternoons. While still in grade school, he won a scholarship to the prestigious Art Institute of Chicago. He later attended the American Academy of Art and upon graduation began a very successful career as an illustrator before becoming an award-winning fine artist.

Johnson's sure brush strokes, bold use of color and impasto, and delicate rendering of the human face and form all work together in harmony to create "Poetic Intimacy." More on Richard S Johnson

Venice, c. 1900
Oil on Canvas

Soren Emil Carlsen (October 19, 1853 – January 2, 1932, New York City, U.S.) was an American Impressionist painter who emigrated to the United States from Denmark. He became known for his still lifes. In an era when many artists succumbed to the pressure resulting from The Armory Show to follow modernistic "developments" Carlsen remained faithful to his inborn aesthetic sense. Later in his career Carlsen expanded his range of subjects and becoming known for landscapes and marines as well.

During his long career he won many of the most important honors in American art and was elected to membership in the National Academy of Design. For more than forty years he was also a respected teacher in Chicago, San Francisco and New York. More on Soren Emil Carlsen

Santa Maria della Salute (English: Saint Mary of Health), commonly known simply as the Salute, is a Roman Catholic church and minor basilica located at Punta della Dogana in the Dorsoduro sestiere of the city of Venice, Italy.

It stands on the narrow finger of Punta della Dogana, between the Grand Canal and the Giudecca Canal, at the Bacino di San Marco, making the church visible when entering the Piazza San Marco from the water. The Salute is part of the parish of the Gesuati and is the most recent of the so-called plague churches.

In 1630, Venice experienced an unusually devastating outbreak of the plague. As a votive offering for the city's deliverance from the pestilence, the Republic of Venice vowed to build and dedicate a church to Our Lady of Health (or of Deliverance, Italian: Salute). The church was designed in the then fashionable baroque style by Baldassare Longhena. Construction began in 1631. Most of the objects of art housed in the church bear references to the Black Death.

The dome of the Salute was an important addition to the Venice skyline and soon became emblematic of the city, inspiring artists like Canaletto, J. M. W. Turner, John Singer Sargent, and the Venetian artist Francesco Guardi. More on Santa Maria della Salute

Dusan Djukaric was born in Teslic, former Yugoslavia, in 1971. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Belgrade, where he still works and lives. For a long time, some two decades, he has been painting frescoes, icons and roof-screens in churches and monasteries, and many of his icons are now part of collections in foreign embassies and diplomatic headquarters.

In the arts world, Dusan Djukaric is known and appreciated for his watercoloursr. As far as the subject matter is concerned, his watercolours paint the world of the artist’s surrounding. There are landscapes of towns and coasts, human figures, nudes, animals. But whatever the themes are, his paintings are equally soft and poetic, with an atmosphere of immediacy and warmth.

Djukaric is subtle and transparent when he paints coasts and seas – beaches, boats, fishermen, ports. These watercolours are full of light, the blueness of the sky and shimmering reflections of the sun against the water surface. With his sense for the subject, he successfully shows the difference between the fleeting nature of the water and the light, opposed to the lasting impression of a stone, a house, a tree.

The colors range from silvery-blue, ochre, to the purple, red and violet tones. The element of light, indispensable in watercolour, helps present a flickering atmosphere that the artist brings to his work. The brush strokes are free, but precise enough not to lose the form of the subject, and still lyrical and fugacious.

Given the difficulty of watercolour as a technique, avoided by most artists, we can only praise the great virtuosity of Dusan Djukaric, who appears to be creating with ease his watercolours full of optimism and beauty. Seeing them will certainly give the audience a fresh breath of good spirit and love for art. More on Dusan Djukaric

01 Painting of the Canals of Venice by the artists of their time, with foot notes. #46

Martin Packford, United Kingdom
Theodore and The Lion
Oil on board
39.4 H x 39.4 W x 0 in

Theodore and the Lion refers to the two columns outside the Palazzo Ducale, named after two patron saints of Venice.

The Column of the Lion and the Column of St. Theodore of Amasea, now located in Piazzetta San Marco, are examples of works coming from the East. They come out of the Venetian participation in the Crusades, concluding in the Sack of Constantinople in 1204. While their origins are uncertain, they represent the city as major landmarks in the region of the Doge’s Palace. The columns themselves seem to come from Constantinople. The Lion of Venice is an ancient bronze winged lion sculpture in the Piazza San Marco. It came to symbolize the city — as well as one of its patron saints, St Mark — after its arrival there in the 12th century. The sculpture surmounts one of two large granite columns in the Square. It has had a very long and obscure history, probably starting its existence as a winged lion-griffin statue on a monument to the god Sandon at Tarsus around 300 BC. At some point came to represent the “Lion of Saint Mark”, traditional symbol of Saint Mark the evangelist. The figure standing on the western column is St. Theodore of Amasea, patron of the city before St Mark, who holds a spear and stands on a crocodile (to represent the dragon which he was said to have slain). It is also made up of separate pieces of antique statues, including a crocodile, a torso and a head. The statue on the column is a copy with the original being kept in the Doge's Palace. More on The Columns of the Lion and St. Theodore

Martin Packford,'s work is primarily concerned with finding a harmonious balance between a clear representation of real locations with a spontaneous and gestural painting process.

Martin's paintings have been privately bought or specially commissioned by clients both nationally and internationally. He currently lives and works in Bristol.

"I am a contemporary landscape painter interested in the technique of painting and the method of using expressive and gestural brushwork to create something that transcends the scene represented into something more visual exciting and emotionally charged. The main focus of my paintings are scenes that depict large groups of people or that have a certain energy that can be expressed rather than just merely reproduced". More on Martin Packford

Bouvard Noel George, 1912-1972, was born on the 25 December, 1912 in Paris, the son of Eloi Noel Beraud, better known as Marc Aldine or Antoine Bouvard. He was a recognised artist of architectural and landscape paintings, however, like his father he became best known for his works of Venetian canals. After studying at Ecole des Beaux Artists he became very influenced by his father and they worked together for many years from 1935 to 1950. Like his father, he often went to Venice to prepare his sketches and drafts from which he was able to create the flowing landscapes and harmonious arrangements, which made his paintings highly sought after in France as well as the UK. Bouvard places the scene carefully on the canvas with surrounding buildings reflecting in the water, and portrays the heat of the sun in its reflection against the stone surfaces. More on Bouvard Noel George

Dietz Edzard, (German/Paris, 1893-1963)
Carnival in Venice, 1958
Oil on canvas
25-1/2" x 31-1/2
Private collection

The Carnival of Venice is an annual festival. The Carnival ends with the Christian celebration of Lent, forty days before Easter, on Shrove Tuesday (Mardi Gras), the day before Ash Wednesday. The festival is world-famous for its elaborate masks

Dietz Edzard, German/Paris, 1893-1963, came from a talented German family of artists and studied with the celebrated "German Expressionist" Max Beckmann in Berlin, before moving to France in the late 1920s. In Paris, he received wide acclaim, exhibiting regularly with the Post-Impressionists at the Jeu de Paume and at Durand-Ruel, where he met Suzanne Eisendieck, a fellow German artist, whom he married in 1938. During the German occupation of France, Edzard's work, like most great modern artists of the time, was determined to be "degenerate"; his and Eisendieck's paintings of women did not "celebrate German womanhood", but chose to depict the "ideal cretin and whore" instead at carnival, the theatre, opera or racetrack. While Edzard embraced Impressionist and Post-Impressionist study of optics and plein-air observations, he was equally influenced by the Fauves and Expressionists, preferring instead to examine color from a personal emotive experience culled from the drama of the streets, cabarets and the denizens who frequented them. 01 Painting of the Canals of Venice by the artists of their time, with foot notes. #42

Félix Ziem, 1821-1911, FRENCH
VENICE, SUNRISE OVER BACINO DI SAN MARCO
Oil on canvas
21 3/8 by 27 3/4 in., 54.3 by 70.5 cm
Private collection

Félix Ziem was the painter of Venice par excellence. In Venice, Sunrise over Bacino di San Marco, Ziem has positioned the viewer on the Molo, evidenced by the piers at lower right and the quickly rendered dock workers on a wharf at left, a favorite vantage point of the master of vedute painting, Canaletto. Looking across the Grand Canal at the ebb and flow of gondolas, his view is bathed in the golden light of sunrise. With characteristic gusto and a careful understanding of the effects of sunlight, Ziem reflects the iridescent light off of the water to brighten the rising clouds and pink granite of the Palazzo Ducale. More on this painting

Félix Ziem (February 26, 1821 – November 10, 1911) was a French painter in the style of the Barbizon School. He was born Félix-Francois Georges Philibert Ziem in Beaune in the Côte-d'Or département of the Burgundy région of France. His mother was a native of Burgundy who had married an immigrant. Originally, Ziem planned to be an architect and studied at the School of Architecture in Dijon, and for a time he worked as an architect. In 1839 he moved to Marseilles, where he received some informal instruction in painting from Adolphe Monticelli. Painting developed from a hobby into a career following a visit in 1841 to Italy, where he fell in love with the city of Venice, a place that would become the source for many of his works, and to which he returned annually until 1892. Apart from Venetian scenes, he also painted many still lifes, portraits, and landscapes from a variety of places including Constantinople, Martigues, Cagnes-sur-Mer and his native Burgundy. More on Félix Ziem

LA CHIESA GESUATI FROM THE CANALE DELLA GIUDECCA, VENICE, c. 1887
Oil on canvas
15½ by 26 in., 39.5 by 66 cm
Private collection

This painting captures the Zattere, meaning raft, built as a dock in the early sixteenth century to accommodate the delivery of timber for ships and buildings. Painted in 1884, the present work could be perceived as del Campo's tribute to Venice's grand history of trade. Red-coated gondoliers, waiting for their next passenger, crowd in front of the Renaissance façade of the Chiesa di Santa Maria della Visitazione. At the center of this composition, bright yellow cargo is off-loaded from the sea-going two-masted brig to the smaller peàta, a cargo boat built specifically to transport goods through Venice’s rios. The brightly-colored sails of flat-bottomed bragozzo flutter as they carry goods across the calm waters of the canal to the island of Giudecca. This bustling view would have been among the first of La Serenissima for many visitors as traghetto and vaporetto launches from the Venice train station made their first landing on the Zattere just beyond Chiesa di Santa Maria del Rosario, more commonly referred to as I Gesuati. Federico del Campo (1837-1923) was a Peruvian painter who was active in Venice where he was one of the leading vedute painters of the 19th century. Del Campo was born in Lima and left his native Peru at a young age. Nothing is known with certainty about his early studies in Peru. He studied at Madrid's Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando (Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando) in Madrid from around 1865. Here he established a friendship with Lorenzo Valles, a history painter. Del Campo subsequently travelled to Italy and painted in Naples, Capri, Rome, Assisi and Venice. During a visit to France he studied new artistic developments in Paris. From 1880, he exhibited works at the annual Salon van de Société des Artistes Français. In 1880 he established himself in Venice.

Here there already was a seizable community of emigré artists, such as Antonietta Brandeis, and the Spanish painters Martín Rico y Ortega, Mariano Fortuny and Rafael Senet. He became good friends with Martín Rico. The two artists worked sometimes together painting the Venetian scenes that were popular with the increasing number of visitors to that city. They responded thus to the large international market for their city views of Venice. Demand for del Campo's views was so strong, that he painted several views multiple times.

Particularly English tourists were taken by del Campo’s vedute of Venice. This was probably the reason why he moved to London in 1893 where he worked for a clientele of aristocrats and successful merchants. He was represented by art dealer Arthur Tooth who was able to organize a special exhibition of his work in Chicago during the World's Columbian Exposition of 1893. This success likely ensured del Campo’s comfortable life style. Little is known about his last two decades but it is likely that he died in London in 1923. More on Federico del Campo

01 Photograph of the Canals of Venice by the artists of their time, with foot notes. #40

Alfred Stieglitz, (1864–1946)
Venetian Canal or A Bit of Venice, c. 1898
Toned photogravure
7 x 4 3/4 in. (17.7 x 12 cm)
Public domain

A Bit of Venice was photographed in the early summer of 1894 and published in New York several times later in the same decade. The striking photograph summarizes the results of Stieglitz's nine years of study in Europe and represents the moment when the impact of his crusade on behalf of photography as an art form was first being felt in the United States. More on this painting

Alfred Stieglitz (January 1, 1864 – July 13, 1946) was the eldest child of highly cultured and prosperous parents. The family of eight spent winters in New York City and summered on the shores of Lake George in upper New York State, as did Stieglitz until his death in 1946. The family went abroad in 1881, where Alfred pursued advanced training in Germany, first as an engineer, and after 1883 as a photographer. By the time he returned to New York in 1890, the quality of his work and the originality of his technical research had earned him a considerable reputation and he soon became widely recognized as one of America's leading artists in photography. Through publications such as Camera Notes (1897-1900) and Camera Work (1903-17), and his active role in photography exhibitions, he played a pivotal role in introducing to Americans the idea that photography, far from just a means of providing a mechanical record, was an art form with its own aesthetic qualities and standards.

In the years before and during World War I, Stieglitz exhibited the work of many of Europe's leading avant-garde artists, as well as emerging American artists and photographers, at the Photo-Secession Gallery, 291. In a succession of galleries thereafter he supported such distinguished American artists as Arthur Dove, Marsden Hartley, John Marin, Gaston Lachaise (1882-1935), and Georgia O'Keeffe (1887-1986).
